Donations to Modesto Bee's Book of Dreams keep rolling in

Large and small, from individuals, businesses and even classes, donations to The Bee’s Book of Dreams fundraiser are coming in.

To date, the effort has brought in roughly $55,000. The money has come via check and PayPal, in memory of lost loved ones, from couples and families, in amounts ranging from $10 to $10,000. Our partner, the Stanislaus Community Foundation, is handling the mailed-in donations, though one donor who sent her check to The Bee thanked us for our efforts and asked us to put the money where it was most needed.

Numerous nonprofit organizations do noble, important work. What’s great about A Book of Dreams is that it’s easy to see where your money goes. Donations are used for wheelchair ramps provided through Advancing Vibrant Communities, for food to keep families fed over the weekends through Blessings in a Backpack, or for a warm meal and a jacket via the United Samaritans Foundation.

“Some donations are designated for a particular charity, so we know the person giving has a personal connection to it,” said Marin Kanaan, executive director of the Stanislaus Community Foundation. “People tend to give to an organization they’re familiar with, or where they believe in the cause.”

Last year, A Book of Dreams brought in a record $62,269. We would like to beat that in 2013, though – like the retailers – we are challenged by a shorter-than-usual holiday season. The drive runs through Friday, so if you haven’t donated, there is still time. Even if we don’t break the record, we will consider this a success. Each dollar that comes in is directed to one of the nonprofit groups to help it provide goods and services to the needy of our community.

If you can’t donate money, please consider giving something even more valuable: your time. Most of the groups we work with in A Book of Dreams are in need of volunteers. You could help prepare lunches for United Samaritans, represent a child in legal proceedings for Court Appointed Special Advocates or help take a senior citizen to doctor appointments for Catholic Charities.
