Nine-year-old girl suffers major injuries in wreck near Del Rio

Bee Staff ReportsDecember 23, 2013

— A 9-year-old girl suffered major injuries Monday when the car she was riding in was rear-ended on McHenry Avenue near Del Rio.

She was in the back seat of a Toyota RAV4 driven by 43-year-old Debra Ellis of Escalon just before 11 a.m. when they stopped at a red light at Stewart Road, said California Highway Patrol Sgt. Ben Moser.

The light had just turned green when a Ford Expedition driven by Barbara Hicks, 66, of Escalon drove into the back of the Toyota at about 35 mph.

Moser said officers are investigating why Hicks did not stop but added that drugs or alcohol did not appear to be a factor.

Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District and Modesto Regional Fire Authority responded and immediately called for an air ambulance for the 9-year-old girl in the Toyota. She was taken by helicopter to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Moser said.

Ellis and a 10-year-old boy who was in the front seat were taken to Memorial Medical Center with minor injuries. Hicks was not injured.
