— Engines responded to fires that damaged two vacant homes Sunday, one near Carver Road in Modesto and the other just east of the city.

Firefighters extinguished a 2:20 p.m. fire in the 1900 block of Debonaire Drive, west of Carver near Muncy Park, but not before it caused $15,000 worth of damage, said Battalion Chief Randy Anderson of the Modesto Regional Fire Authority.

Neighbors told officials they had seen homeless people in the neighborhood. Crews brought the fire under control in 20 minutes.

Earlier Sunday, a fire destroyed an old house on Frazine Road, east of Claus Road. The first units, dispatched at 12:50 p.m., found the home fully involved with flames and smoke.

Witnesses told investigators they saw a suspicious person in the area, and an individual was detained for questioning.

The Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District was assisted by units from the regional fire authority and Ceres.
