— A 23-year-old man was taken into custody by Merced County Sheriff’s deputies Saturday evening after a report of a verbal altercation with his family.

The suspect, Anthony Cabral, was arrested around 9:30 p.m. at the residence in the 17000 block of Williams Avenue near Griffith Road in Hilmar, according to Deputy Delray Shelton, sheriff’s spokeman.

Deputies were called to the residence around 4 p.m. regarding the verbal altercation. Cabral is accused of pulling out a handgun and brandishing it at family members. All of them were able to leave the home safely without injuries.

The department’s SWAT team responded to the scene. It was believed Cabral was barricaded inside the residence with the handgun in his possession and access to additional firearms. Investigators later concluded Cabral had left the residence before their arrival, Shelton said.

Although Cabral had left the scene, deputies successfully negotiated with him via telephone. He eventually returned to the home and surrendered without incident. Shelton said the gun Cabral had brandished earlier during the day was recovered inside the home.

Cabral was booked at the Merced County Jail on suspicion of felony threats and brandishing a firearm. He’s being held in lieu of $250,000 bail.
