Darlene Mitchell: Taking back Christmas

December 20, 2013

Thursday I went Christmas shopping; that’s what the papers advertise – only 10 days left! You hear about Christmas parties, Christmas this or that when referring to the 25th of December. But businesses, I understand, have instructed their employees to say “happy holidays” so as not to offend anyone. I’m someone! And I am offended!

It is Christmas, it is a national holiday and it’s called Christmas. They do not want to call it Christmas because Christ’s name is in it. Well, it was in the name when Christmas was made a national day of celebration.

To people who wish me a “happy holiday,” I respond “Merry Christmas.” They tell me they don’t know who to wish Merry Christmas to. Say it to everyone.

Let’s take back Christmas! Wish everyone “Merry Christmas,” say it loud and clear; we do not have to stifle “Merry Christmas” just because a small amount of people want to change our ways. Happy holidays! Bah humbug, it’s Christmas!
