MODESTO — Mail theft increases during the holiday season with the additional personal mail and packages being delivered to homes, according to Modesto police.
Many police reports involve theft of packages off of the porch or doorstep. Some even involve people following delivery trucks to take packages after they are delivered.
Modesto police suggest that residents require a signature for delivered packages or have them delivered to the workplace if no one will be home to bring it inside immediately.
Deliver outgoing mail to the post office instead of a personal mailbox, have personal checks delivered to your bank for pickup and check the mail daily. Police also ask residents to be good neighbors and report suspicious activity immediately.
An alert neighbor recently took pictures of two people taking packages from a northwest Modesto home.
Police ask anyone who may have information on the people in the photos to call Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward. Tipsters can also text information to Crime Stoppers by sending a message to 274637. Just type TIP704 along with a message.
