Modesto church to hold violence prevention banquet

— First CME Church of Modesto is planning to hold a violence prevention banquet Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the church, 208 Pine St.

Wanda Johnson-Moore, mother of Oscar Grant, will be the keynote speaker. Grant was shot and killed by a BART officer in 2009, in an incident that sparked protests and was made into a movie, “Fruitvale Station,” released earlier this year.

The event will pay tribute to west Modesto families whose members have been the victims of violent crime.

Donations of $25 per person or $50 for VIP seating are requested.

For more information, or to receive tickets or make a donation, call Debra Prescott at (209) 303-0030 or pastor Victor Travis at (510) 677-1363.

Modesto Bee is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news.
