Charles Chavez: Amazon ageist? That’s a laugh

December 11, 2013

Regarding “Amazon dislikes older workers” (Letters, Dec. 10): I don’t know where the writer got his information about hiring only the young at the new Amazon facility in Patterson, but it couldn’t be further from the truth.

I was hired by Amazon back in late September and find no validity in the accusation that Amazon hires only the young. I work with people who are 21. I work with people that are in their 30s or 40s. But mostly I work with a great number of people who are at or near my own age. I just celebrated my 57th birthday earlier this month!

We all are driven to be the best at what we do, no matter what that job might be. Age has nothing to do with the desire to be part of something bigger than yourself. We are all part of the Amazon family, and pretty happy to be so – no matter what our age. To claim that Amazon discriminates against older workers is a claim without merit, or proof.
