Melissa Hanson: Penalizing city schools is silly

December 11, 2013

In The Bee’s article “Schools’ funding discussed” (Page B1, Dec. 10) it notes the Affordable Care Act will cost Modesto City Schools a minimum of $5 million as a penalty for not providing health care to teachers. The article also states “Modesto teachers gave up health coverage for higher salaries years ago ...” So let me get this straight: The district is getting fined for not providing health care to employees who do not want it. Am I missing something? This Affordable Care Act isn’t so affordable.
