Edwin Silva: Amazon dislikes older workers

December 9, 2013

Dear great and mighty Amazon: I and many other jobseekers are thrilled by the fact that you chose the Central Valley to be your new home. You can do a lot of great things by using the workforce here and together we can show the rest of California that this area of the state is filled with industrious, family-minded, God-fearing folks.

So it’s with a heavy heart that I’ve noticed on more than a few occasions you’ve been guilty of ageism in your hiring practices. Ageism is being discriminated against because of your age. Speaking with a few of your applicants who were denied or looked over, similarities became quite apparent. All possessed great work histories spanning decades, impeccable references, top-notch skill sets. Oh yeah, one more thing: They were all in their late 40s or early 50s. Then I go to work and find out that several 21-year-old temps were hired immediately, even though their work histories consisted of fast-food restaurants and paper routes. This realization vexes me. Reality is nothing; perception is everything.

P.S. Your drone delivery idea rocks!
