— The Modesto Regional Fire Authority has opened its third advanced life support engine company.

Engine 1, in downtown Modesto, will begin providing the services as of Thursday. Engine 1 is staffed with at least one paramedic firefighter 24 hours a day.

Paramedics can administer lifesaving medications in critical situations, including for victims of a heart attack or stroke.

Modesto has been providing advanced life support services with paramedic firefighters since 2002.

The other two advanced life support engines are Engine 2 in west Modesto and Engine 9 in east Modesto.

The Fire Authority provides fire protection and emergency services to residents of Modesto and Salida through 12 fire stations.
