Wreaths Across America
The Santa Nella event will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday. Organizers encourage volunteers from military, law enforcement, service clubs, motorcycle clubs and veterans and family members to place wreaths at the cemetery. They encourage volunteers to meet at 7 that morning at Dennys, 12820 State Highway 33 in Gustine for breakfast, to socialize and plan the days duties.
Humphreys law grads
Sixteen Humphreys College law students who recently passed the California State Bar Examination, including eight from the Modesto area, were sworn in Friday in Stockton. The Modesto-area students were Ashley Albertoni, Tamran Amaral, Harmandeep Kaur, Richard Moths, Vita Palazuelos, Ryan Roth, Spencer Sinclair and Rosalinda Ruppel.
Modestan in AmeriCorps
Kyra Haney of Modesto recently began a 10-month stint in the National Civilian Community Corps, an AmeriCorps program. Haney will be responsible for completing a series of six- to eight-week-long service projects as part of a 10- to 12-person team. Her first service projects will end Dec. 19, at which time teams will break for the winter holidays and begin a new project in a new location in January. In exchange for her service, shell receive $5,550 to help pay for college.
Young filmmakers take note
Yosemite National Park is conducting a Youth in Yosemite Short Film Contest. The contest is open to anyone 25 years of age or younger. The deadline to submit the short films is 5 p.m. Jan. 10. Film themes should be focused on Celebrating Nature or What Yosemite Means to Me and be no more than 15 minutes in length. Each theme is designed to celebrate art, beauty, inspiration, the nature of Yosemite, and a personal connection to the park. Contest winners will be notified by phone.

Club aids children
The Active 20-30 Club of Turlock hosted a Christmas shopping spree last week for about 50 low-income children. Club members shopped with the youngsters for coats, socks, underwear and other essentials at Target in Turlock. The club also provided dinner. It raised money for the effort at its annual Wine and Screams event in October.
