MODESTO — Congregation Beth Shalom held what it called the first annual (and first ever!) outdoor public menorah lighting at Tenth Street Plaza in downtown Modesto on Tuesday afternoon.
More than 100 people attended the 5 p.m. event on the seventh night of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. After the lighting, attendees escaped the cold for a family party at the congregations 1705 Sherwood Ave. synagogue, where they enjoyed latkes, sufganiot doughnuts, dreidl games, storytelling and music.
Saturday night from 8 to 11:30, the synagogue will hold its Latkes & Vodkas event, featuring martini drinks, wine and dancing to live music by Eli Lester of The Cryin Shame and John Clifton of the MOFO Party Band, along with other musicians playing blues and rock.
Tickets for the 21-and-older event are $30 in advance, $35 at the door and include hors doeuvres and two drink tickets.
Tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com or from the Congregation Beth Shalom office.
