General pays respects

December 3, 2013

Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen Jr., superintendent at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., spoke to Downey High School students Monday afternoon and later dedicated a bronze statue at the school. The sculpture of boots, a gun, helmet and dog tags was created by artist Betty Saletta in memory of 1st Lt. Daniel Hyde, a Downey graduate who was killed March 7, 2009, in Iraq. Caslen was the commanding general of Hyde’s division in Iraq when Hyde was killed. Hyde served two terms as student body president at Downey. He graduated from West Point in 2007.
