Raymond Dell: Modesto drivers don’t respect pedestrians

November 28, 2013

It must be the atmosphere here in Modesto. How else can you explain the lack of courtesy on the part of Modesto drivers? (I’m a native of Modesto; born and grew up here.)

My wife and I walk every day. In the course of our walks we have to cross Floyd Avenue twice. As we step off the curb into the crosswalk with a car far away enough to see us with plenty of time to stop, it’s funny how we seem to become absolutely invisible – even in bright sunlight.

I wonder if the drivers feel that, as motorists, they have the right of way. It really makes me angry that there is such a lack of courtesy on the part of the those who drive Modesto’s streets. I am not a perfect driver, but I always try to stop for pedestrians if I see them in or near a crosswalk. Give those attempting to cross a street a brake.
