The Rev. Misael Avila: Treat all sex crimes equally

November 26, 2013

The Modesto Bee recently published in the briefs section that a Mormon bishop had pleaded guilty to two felony sex crimes involving teen girls who attended his church (“Former Mormon bishop pleads guilty,” Nov. 15, Page A3).

First of all, I pray for these innocent girls, their families and for this bishop, too. May God have mercy on him. Secondly, I don’t necessarily want the story of this bishop to be on the front page of this newspaper, but I am sure if a Catholic bishop had been accused of sexual misconduct it would have been a front-page story. I think this is called bias. The media does a great service to the public when it reports objectively; otherwise, it hurts the noble vocation of a journalist.
