MODESTO — It sounds like the Carsberg family will have a very happy holiday season, at least as far as electronics go.
Chris Carsberg arrived at 8 p.m. Sunday to camp out in front of the Best Buy store in Riverbank. He said Tuesday he is staking out the first of six spots for family members wanting to get first shot at the deals the electronics retailer will offer this week. The Carsbergs are looking for television sets. Behind them in line are Tim Miller, looking to pick up a PS4 game system, and Veronica Lewis, seeking a 39-inch television.
Best Buy, like many other big-box retailers, has moved the traditional Black Friday shopping event up into Thursday. But opening at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day doesnt give Best Buy the distinction of being the first for customers Toys R Us will open an hour earlier, at 5 p.m. And Kmart, which traditionally has been open on Thanksgiving Day, will kick off with sales at 6 a.m.
Old Navy will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, before reopening at 7 p.m. that evening to stay open until 11 p.m. Friday. Walmart, also traditionally open on Thanksgiving Day, will start with a round of sales at 6 p.m., followed by another set at 8 p.m.
Other stores, including Vintage Faire Mall anchors JCPenney, Sears, Macys and Forever 21, will open their doors at 8 p.m., followed by their smaller brethren at midnight.
Nationwide, protests and petitions have been launched, targeting retailers that open on Thanksgiving Day. But stores are just the latest businesses to the fray holidays are often big business at movie theaters and, of course, restaurants. Other careers also require working holidays. These include members of the military, law enforcement, health care employees and, ahem, journalists.
Retail representatives counter protests with the argument that they need to stay competitive, particularly in a holiday shopping season that is one weekend shorter than normal this year.
As for Carsberg, his campout wont require him to miss out on a big Thanksgiving dinner. He said his family will rotate getting dinner so as not to give up its spot underneath the blue tarp.
