A 26-year-old man from Manteca died Friday morning after the tractor trailer he was driving went off the Clavey River Bridge near Sonora, authorities said.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the 26-year-old man, whose name was not released, was heading east on Cottonwood Road, going faster than 45 mph, when the accident occurred about 10:30 a.m.
He was hauling straw intended to be used to limit erosion in the Rim fire area, authorities said.
The man could not slow the vehicle enough to negotiate a sharp right-hand curve. The car went through the metal guardrail and off the bridge, falling 100 feet to the river canyon below,
The driver was pinned inside. He was declared dead at the scene.
