The Salvation Army helped Nic Svoboda make some very big – and necessary – changes.

“In 2010, I was making bad decisions,” said the now-33-year-old Svoboda. “I had spent a lot of time locked up and burned a lot of bridges.”

His family didn’t want him around and his friends were not the kind of people he could turn to for help.

So Svoboda found himself at The Salvation Army in Stockton. He went through a six-month rehabilitation program before moving to Modesto and spending 10 months in The Salvation Army’s transitional shelter.

“I was able to get my life back on track,” he said. “I got a job and was able to move back out on my own.”

Now Svoboda is in an apprentice program and looking toward a career in electrical work. And he is reunited with his family. “I’m just thankful,” he said. “I changed, but they gave me the tools to change my actions.”
