Atwater police seeking driver after high-speed chase

By Sun-Star staffNovember 22, 2013

Atwater police are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the driver of a vehicle who fled from an officer Thursday night.

The vehicle, described as a silver Pontiac Firebird, was spotted with expired vehicle registration tags just after 8 p.m., according to a brief statement from the Atwater Police Department.

The driver fled at “a high rate of speed” in the area of S.P. Avenue and Herrod Street. The officer chased the vehicle for about one minute before the on-duty supervisor ordered the officer to stop.

It was not clear why the chase was terminated. Officers commonly stop chasing a speeding vehicle for public safety reasons, police have said previously.

The pursuit covered just over three miles, police said.

Anyone with information regarding the driver or the vehicle is asked to contact the Atwater Police Department at (209) 357-6396.
