Stacy Shirley: Role of government is clear

November 20, 2013

The letter “Conservative ‘extremists’ fly right” (Letters, Nov. 15) was completely inaccurate. The government doesn’t tax enough when it comes to corporations and the rich; tax rates are at a historic low right now, and the wages of the middle class and the working poor are flat or falling.

The profit motive does not generate research and development, it is largely funded with taxpayer dollars through state universities and other government institutions.

The Affordable Care Act is not a government takeover of the health care industry. It regulates the health insurance industry so millions of uninsured Americans can afford to purchase some. The government should take over the insurance industry and remove the profit motive; it would be a good thing. Just ask anyone over 65 if they like their Medicare – which is government insurance.

One thing is true: the government doesn’t know how to make money. That’s because it isn’t its job to make money; government’s job is to govern with the consent of the governed. Consent is given at the voting booth, and a democratically elected legislature passed the ACA.

It’s the law of the land, get used to it.
