MODESTO — The weather turned Tuesday morning, but 400 Franklin Elementary students had new coats to button up against the chill.
Monday afternoon, eight volunteers from Modestos Phi Gamma Chapter of Omega Nu were at the school fitting students with 430 child-sized coats, extra-small through extra-large, said Dina Brambila, Franklins Healthy Start coordinator.
By Tuesday, only about 30 were left. One, however, was the perfect fit for a small girl spotted on campus without a coat.
She was crying so happy because she didnt have a jacket and it was pretty cold today. It was wonderful to see that, Brambila said.
Though gently used, the coats were in good shape and helped fill a large need at the campus, which serves nearly 1,100 pre-schoolers through sixth-graders.
This group of ladies did a beautiful job, Brambila said, washing every coat, repairing small tears and replacing lost buttons. There was so much attention to detail, she said.
The drive was the brainchild of a Prescott Junior High student whose mother is an Omega Nu member, she said. Volunteers made sure the coats fit correctly and provided hot cocoa and snacks for children to have while they waited.
