Support Merced’s arts

Donate $1 or more to benefit the Arts Council’s programs at: J & R Tacos, Coffee Bandits, 17th Street Public House, The Partisan, A Blooming Affair, Five Ten Bistro, Merced Antique Mall, Toni’s Courtyard Café (ask the cashier). All proceeds go to the Merced County Arts Council.

Rescue Mission dinner

Merced County’s Rescue Mission will hold a traditional holiday dinner, free, on Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, to those in need. Clothes and toys will be distributed. Help the group reach its goal to feed 3,000 Merced County residents. Drop off items from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week, at the mission, 1921 Canal St. Volunteer to serve from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Nov. 28, American Legion Hall, 939 W. Main St., Merced and/or 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Dec. 24, at the same location. Call (209) 722-9269 for more information.

Seeking volunteers

New Beginnings Merced, a nonprofit dedicated to saving shelter animals and finding them homes, needs volunteers. Especially needed are people who can foster kittens for a few days, or take care of dogs and their puppies for a short time. Also needed are people to help take photos of shelter animals or to help transport animals to rescue organizations. No personal vehicles are needed for transportation. Call (209) 769-2122.

Help for new businesses

SCORE is the acronym for the Service Corps of Retired Executives. They act as counselors to small business. Their service is free. Sessions are held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. Workshops available. For information or to make an appointment, call (209) 724-2033.

Free legal services for seniors

Central California Legal Services Inc. and Merced County provide free legal services to seniors. Clients must live in Merced County, be at least 60 and a U.S. citizen. Appointments are available in Dos Palos, Livingston, Los Banos, Atwater and Merced. Call (209) 385-7550.

VFW Hall available for rentals

The Atwater VFW Club Hall is available for rent to the public for parties. It holds 150 people and has a full-service kitchen. Also, Hamburger Night is every Wednesday from 5 to 7. Call (209) 358-7224 for more information.

Flea and farmers market

The Merced Flea and Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. behind the fairgrounds, 900 G St. EBT is accepted.
