Firefighters kept hopping overnight

November 15, 2013

Modesto Regional firefighters responded to two fires early Friday. The first occurred at 12:43 a.m. at a home in the 1500 block of College Avenue. Police told firefighters the house was vacant, but a woman had been squatting there. She left after firefighters arrived. The fire was contained within seven minutes. Damages were estimated at $25,000. Four hours later, firefighters were dispatched to the Safeway supermarket on McHenry Avenue for a fire in the deli. They found a small fire under a deep fat fryer. They removed the fryer before putting the blaze out with a fire extinguisher.
