A bright spot on J Street in Modesto is the State Theatre, both because of its light-the-night marquee and because it attracts so many people with its wide variety of independent and specialty films, plus other events. As reported by Marijke Rowland in Monday’s Bee, the nonprofit movie house and event venue needs to convert to digital projection in order to keep receiving movies from distributors and stay open.

General manager Sue Richardson said the State has already lost out on some films this year because it only can show 35 mm films. The conversion will cost $200,000, and $80,000 was raised at an event last month. The State hopes to raise $85,000 more through an online campaign that begins Monday.

The historic State Theatre is a true asset to our community, and it needs the help of Modestans to stay open. For more information, go to www.thestate.org or call (209) 527-4697.
