E.&J. Gallo Winery has donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross fund to assist rescue and relief teams in response to typhoon Haiyan, which has affected more than 11million people across 36 provinces in the Philippines.
“On behalf of our employees and their families, we are making this donation to help the rescue effort and to provide aid and comfort to the victims of this terrible disaster,” said Joseph Gallo, chief executive officer and president of the E.&J. Gallo Winery, in a news release today. “This disaster strikes close to home, as we have valued relationships with distributors, retailers and consumers who live in the Philippines and have suffered losses.”
The donation will be used to provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance to victims living in the Philippines, the release said.
Typhoon Haiyan swept across the central Philippines on Friday, leaving a trail of massive destruction in its wake. With sustained winds reported at over 145mph, and significantly stronger gusts, Haiyan was the second category 5 typhoon to strike the Philippines this year.
In its appeal for funds, the U.N. estimated that the typhoon left 660,000 homeless. The official death toll passed 1,700 today and is expected to rise substantially.
