MODESTO — The men and women who have served, and do serve, our nation received a star-spangled salute in the annual Veterans Day parade in downtown Modesto on Monday.
People of all ages, many wearing red, white and blue and waving Old Glory, lined the route along Needham Street to Graceada Park, where a program included the presentation of colors, music and speakers.
The parades grand marshal was Terrence Van Doorn, a Marine veteran of the war in Iraq who now is a veterans service representative for Stanislaus County, helping veterans and their dependents obtain services such as post-traumatic stress counseling, health care, housing and survivor benefits.
The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corp, from Modesto, and the Stanislaus Military Academy, from Turlock, marched in Mondays parade. At right, Korean War veteran Rex Embry, 81, holds his great-grandson, 6-week-old Madison Embry, at the post-parade gathering at Graceada Park.
