SALVATION ARMY – MODESTO CITADEL

Thanks-for-Giving Dinner

DATE: Nov. 28

NEEDED: Volunteers 14 and older to serve food on Thanksgiving Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Modesto Centre Plaza. Volunteers are asked to join the activities by helping set up/clean up,and by assisting with games, pictures, face painting and more. Three volunteer shifts are available from 9 to 11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and noon to 4 p.m. Donations of turkeys, holiday treats, and financial assistance are also appreciated. The Salvation Army Modesto Corps provides assistance with emergency food, noon meals, information and referral, disaster aid, meals on wheels, youth programs and senior services.

UNITED SAMARITANS FOUNDATION

Thanksgiving Day Dinner Distribution

DATE: Nov. 28

NEEDED: Volunteers are needed on Thanksgiving Day to provide hot holiday meals to the needy in Ceres, Hughson, Keyes, Modesto and Turlock on Nov. 28. Volunteers 18 and older are accepted; however can accommodate 10- to 13-year-olds with parent or 14- to 17-year-olds with permission slip. Volunteers are needed to assist with dinner preparation, distribute meals from the United Samaritans lunch trucks, and clean up after distribution at the Hughson, Modesto and Turlock sites. Any volunteer wanting to hand out the food will need to follow the lunch truck in their own vehicle. Volunteer shifts are available between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. depending upon site. Monetary donations and traditional precooked holiday food items are needed to help provide the meals this Thanksgiving.

ONGOING VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

AARP

NEEDED: Volunteers 18 and older are needed to assist in preparing taxes for the 2013 tax season. Opportunities include greeters, screeners, translators and tax preparers. All volunteer tax preparers will be trained and pass a certification exam. Trainings are offered in person, which is recommended, or can be taken independently through online training. Tax preparers will learn how to determine client eligibility for tax credits, how to utilize professional tax software, and learn basic to advanced tax laws. All volunteers are required to complete the Standard of Conduct Exam, have reliable transportation and be trustworthy and punctual. Dates and times will vary. Tax preparation sites are in cities across Stanislaus County. Volunteers will be able to choose the locations, dates and times convenient to them.

FRIENDS OF THE MODESTO LIBRARY

NEEDED: Volunteers 18 and older are needed to assist in The Little Shop. No experience is necessary. Shifts are three hours each from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturdays. Each volunteer can pick how often, and when they would like to come in. Sales associate volunteers are required to open and close the store, operate a cash register, and interact with customers. There are many benefits of this volunteer position, including supporting the Modesto library, gaining beneficial work experience and getting involved in your community. The Little Shop is a small gift shop run entirely by volunteers, which sells donated books, school and office supplies, art work form local artists, along with many other items. The proceeds help to support the Friends’ library projects.

INTER-FAITH MINISTRIES

NEEDED: Volunteers 16 and older are needed to help provide food and clothing to needy individuals and families weekdays. Warehouse volunteers pick up, receive, sort and distribute food to clients; Food Pantry volunteers interview clients, offer support and referrals, bag grocery orders and stock shelves; and Clothes Closet volunteers sort clothing and assist in the community clothes closet. Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., depending on the volunteer position. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age or 16 to 17 years with parental permission and be able to lift at least 25 to 40 pounds.

LEARNING QUEST – STANISLAUS LITERACY CENTER

NEEDED: Volunteers 16 years and older spend just 90 minutes twice a week increasing a student’s basic reading skills. Stanislaus Literacy Center has 46 adults who have requested help with reading and need a volunteer literacy tutor. Both are offered at LearningQuest, 1032 11th St., Modesto.

SUTTER GOULD MEDICAL FOUNDATION

NEEDED: Volunteers 18 and older and junior volunteers 16 years and older are needed with customer service skills to serve as greeters, help with the coffee cart, and various other tasks. All volunteers should have excellent people skills, enjoy interaction with patients and be self-starters. Bilingual ability is a plus, but not required. There are many opportunities in various areas such as pediatrics, Briggsmore Specialty Center and oncology. Volunteer hours are Monday through Friday, with flexible schedules from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Applications can be picked up at the Information Desk at 600 Coffee Road, Modesto, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Adult applicants will need tuberculosis and background clearance and junior applicants will need a TB clearance.

STANISLAUS COUNTY HEALTH SERVICES AGENCY

NEEDED: Volunteers 18 and older are needed to greet visitors of the HSA Gift Shop, provide customer service, sell merchandise, wrap gifts as requested and perform general store cleaning. Requires a one-year commitment of one day per week. Gift Shop hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Must pass a background check and drug screening. Training is provided. All proceeds of the Gift Shop are donated to the Health Services Agency for medical equipment purchases, scholarships and programs such as Adopt-A-Family.
