Prep football roundup: Modesto rolls; Gardner rushes for 320

MODESTO 49, JOHANSEN 6 — The Panthers clinched the Modesto Metro Conference's No. 1 seed with a big victory over the Vikings. Modesto, which improved to 5-1 in the MMC and 7-3 overall, will await the Sac-Joaquin Section playoff pairings, which will be announced this afternoon. The Vikings, who fell behind 42-0 at halftime, concluded the season 0-6, 0-10.

STONE RIDGE CHRISTIAN 40, BIG VALLEY CHRISTIAN 13, at Modesto — Stone Ridge Christian rode the running back tandem of Estevan Herrera (178 rushing yards) and Jaime Trevino (142 yards) to a convincing road win over Big Valley Christian and the school's first ever playoff appearance.

HILMAR 31, HUGHSON 6, at Hughson — Jonathan O'Brien passed for four second-half touchdowns to turn a close game at halftime into a convincing Hilmar victory. The Yellowjackets (10-0, 5-0 TVL) completed a perfect regular season and should be the No. 1 seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 4 playoffs.

MARIPOSA 42, GUSTINE 7, at Gustine — The Grizzlies (8-2) bounced back from last week's Green & Gold Bowl loss with a rout of Gustine.

MODESTO CHRISTIAN 62, ORESTIMBA 20, at Newman — Anthony Brooks scored four touchdowns, including a 70-yard scoring run, as the Crusaders thrashed the Warriors.

ESCALON 62, RIVERBANK 14 — The Cougars held the Bruins to just 57 yards of total offense and the teams played with a running clock in the second half of their TVL finale. Ten Escalon players scored, with two touchdowns coming from Tyler Lawrence on a 4-yard run and a 19-yard pass from Ben Hood. Hood also connected with Jacob Salvatore on an 18-yard scoring pass.

CENTRAL VALLEY 48, CERES 15, at Ceres — Central Valley, behind 320 yards and four TDs from running back Ja'Quan Gardner, defeated rival Ceres in the Crosstown Showdown. The Hawks, 6-4 overall, are likely to gain a playoff berth. In addition to Gardner, Angelo Bermudez gained 158 yards on nine carries. Gardner has 2,089 yards this season and 5,636 for his career.

CALAVERAS 26, BRET HARTE 7 — The Redskins scored on three plays of more than 40 yards to clinch the Mother Lode League title outright. Justin Thornberg scored on a 60-yard reception from Mikey Seawell, and Seawell later scored on a 43-yard run.

LINDEN 17, SUMMERVILLE 7 — The Lions got touchdown runs from Bailey Wright (six yards) and Eddy Muarik (41) in the victory over the Bears.

AMADOR 8, ARGONAUT 6 — Amador benefitted from a safety in the third quarter and held on to improve to 9-1 overall (4-1 MLL). Donald White rushed for 123 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and added 26 yards receiving for the Buffaloes.
