Lenore Shively: Somerset School memories

November 8, 2013

In reference to the Oct. 26 letter “Principal is mentor”: I had the good fortune to be one of the first staff at the Somerset School. I remember walking with students carrying their books from Sylvan School to Somerset .

I am not sure how many remember who named the school or how the name was selected. I was one of two English teachers, and I required that my students write an essay on what they thought the name of the new school should be and why. One student related the school to its close proximity to Sherwood Forest. The board, with Coleman Brown as superintendent, selected the student’s essay.

I had the good fortune to meet this student some time ago and we talked about Somerset and the great students and staff that were a part of her junior high experience and my teaching career. This letter to the editor brought back some special memories.
