The Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra celebrates the opening of its 37th season Saturday with its new Music Director.

The area youth orchestra, comprised of some 100 students in three different ensembles, will be led for the first time by its newly appointed Music Director Ryan Murray. Murray was selected in June to helm the youth orchestra and will conduct the group’s Symphony Orchestra. He is also recently appointed the Music Director for Modesto’s Townsend Opera and the Artistic Director for the Napa Valley Youth Symphony.

Ryan graduated from California State University, Sacramento, and went on to teach bassoon at the college in 2010. He has worked as a guest clinician for youth orchestras and choirs throughout California and has served previously as the co-director for the California Youth Symphony Summer Orchestra Camp. Earlier this year Ryan was selected as a runner-up for the Ansbacher Fellowship for Young Conductors with the Vienna Philharmonica the Salzburg Festival.

Next year he will make his conducting debut together with the Napa Symphony and MSYO in a joint concert at Carnegie Hall.

The Modesto youth orchestra season operner will feature its Concert Orchestra, the beginner to intermediate strings-only ensemble; Wind Ensemble, an intermediate wind and percussion ensemble; and Symphony Orchestra, its advanced full orchestra. The program will include works by Guiseppe Verdi, George Frederick Handel and Pytor Tchaikovsky among others.
