TURLOCK IRRIGATION DISTRICT

Alamo, Macedo win new TID terms

— Incumbents Joe Alamo and Ron Macedo won second terms on the Turlock Irrigation District board Tuesday night.

Alamo had 63percent of the votes in his race against Dan Agundez with 100percent of precincts reporting. They vied in an area that includes west Ceres and the northwest part of the district.

Macedo defeated Darrel Monroe in an area from Turlock to north Merced County. The incumbent had 59percent of the vote in the Stanislaus County portion with 86percent of precincts reporting, and 68percent in the Merced County portion with 100percent reporting.

Alamo, a dairy farmer, said he would continue to work for affordable water and electricity rates while fighting state and federal efforts to increase Tuolumne River flows.

“The more surface water that we have available here in our Turlock groundwater basin, the less impact we have on own groundwater,” he said.

Agundez, a retired power supervisor for Pacific Gas & Electric Co., said the district was not paying enough attention to the effects of its groundwater pumping on private wells. He also said TID was spending too much on the private company providing backup line workers in the wake of a power outage last year in which management could not find any of the TID workers.

Macedo, an almond grower, could not be reached Tuesday night. He said during the campaign that he would work to protect the district’s Tuolumne supply. He also said the district has increased the groundwater supply with seepage from flood irrigation.

Monroe, a ditch tender for the district until he was fired, said it was overusing groundwater and paying too much for the backup line crews.
