— Tuesday is decision day for a proposed sales-tax increase in Modesto, and for numerous city, school and irrigation district seats in Stanislaus County.

Polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. People voting by mail can drop off their ballots at polling places or the county election office by 8 p.m.

Measure X in Modesto would raise the sales tax by 1 percentage point for six years. It needs only a simple majority to pass because it would not earmark the money for specific purposes; however, backers have made it clear that it is intended to benefit police and fire protection the most.

Voters will fill three city council seats in Modesto, two in Ceres and one in Waterford. Three seats on the Modesto Irrigation District board are at stake, as are two on the Turlock irrigation board and one in the Patterson Irrigation District.

School board races include Modesto City Schools; the Riverbank, Oakdale, Turlock and Denair districts; and the Stanislaus County Board of Education.

Modesto voters will consider an advisory measure on eventually extending sewer service to the airport neighborhood. Waterford voters will consider revising their community services district.

Off-year elections such as these tend to have low turnouts. Only 22.4 percent of the county’s registered voters took part in November 2011. A year ago, with the presidency and other high-profile offices at stake, turnout in the county reached 67.4 percent.

People with questions about voting can call the county election office at (209) 525-5200.
