MJC, Hobby win Big 8 running title

October 31, 2013

The Modesto Junior College women's cross country team and their star runner Becky Hobby are Big 8 Conference champions.

Hobby won Thursday's championship race at Tuolumne River Regional Park in 18 minutes, 7 seconds — 18 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Taylor Falk of Santa Rosa Community College.

The Pirates placed five runners in the top 25 — Kaylee Sedler (6th), Dana Pollard (14th), Karina Ruiz (15th), Ceslie Cooksey (20th), and Cecilia Carretero (21st).

It was MJC's third Big 8 championship in six years.

Hobby, who was fifth in the state last year, ran her fastest time ever. But she wasn't alone. All of the MJC runners had their fastest races.

MJC is ranked fourth in Northern California, following American River, Sequoias and Santa Rosa. Thursday's result could push the Pirates higher.
