Bibiana C. Alonzo-Sandoval: Don’t water down ethnic studies at Stanislaus State

October 30, 2013

I learned today of the watering down of the California State University, Stanislaus, ethnic studies department’s course offering. I am very sad to see such an important department’s demise.

I, as an alumni, am saddened to see the importance of cultural diversity and cultivation take second-rate citizenship status. As a first generation college graduate, I want to see other college students find the resources, rich history, and great impact that the ethnic studies department and its classes have on the future educators, business owners and community leaders. We need qualified and specialized professors teaching such important courses, not a general education that is geared at the masses.

CSU, Stanislaus, don’t revert back to what was seen 30 years ago. Give my children the chance to see and grow as Chicanos just like I had that same opportunity.
