In recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, The Center For A Nonviolent Community placed 329 flags on a lawn in Standard, east of Sonora. Each flag represents a victim of domestic violence whom the nonprofit agency served from July 1, 2012, through June 30, 2013. The lawn is next to the old Pickering Lumber Co. hospital building built in 1930 but used as an office building for the past several decades. The nonprofit was formed in 1997 and moved to Standard in 2012. Domestic violence victims can call for help 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on the agency’s hot line: (209)533-3401.
