71,000 signatures in bid to save Modesto High job

October 29, 2013

A Modesto High alum started a petition drive to save the job of longtime campus supervisor Jackie Munn and plans an off-campus protest for lunchtime Thursday Oct 31.

Gina Hernandez, Class of 2001, said she was a student body officer and knew Munn through many volunteer activities. Hernandez said she looked into the incident and believes Munn is being targeted, a charge Modesto City Schools administrators deny.

As of Tuesday, the petition at change.org had more than 71,000 signatures, with the number growing by more than 1,000 names an hour.

Initially, the signers were all local or former MHS students, many giving testimonials of ways Munn had helped them. Now, signers are coming from everywhere, touched by a change.org email to its nationwide network about Munn. It includes Hernandez’s email, in which she says Munn was fired “for protecting a female student from a violent bully.”

The petition site includes Hernandez’s description of the March incident and ends urging supporters to not vote for incumbents on Election Day.
