In response to U.S cant support the whole world (Letters, Oct.23): The author concludes Obama was elected because of Mexicans and black people. While it is true that the majority of Mexicans/Latinos/Asians voted for Obama, it is not true that he was elected because of the black vote. Blacks constitute 13 percent of the total population of which 4 percent doesnt vote in any election, and 2 percent votes Republican or independent.
That means that 7 percent voted for Obama. Therefore, black Americans did not elect Obama. Obama was elected because he received a majority of votes from young white people and white women.
The writer assumes that blacks are monolithic. We are not. Some of us do not vote based on race, but the persons agenda and qualifications that will benefit all Americans.
