Psychic reader's parlor burns in Modesto

October 27, 2013

— Authorities said arson was the cause of a fire Sunday morning in a psychic reader’s parlor at Sylvan Avenue and Oakdale Road in Modesto.

At about 5:25 a.m., a witness saw smoke coming from a window on the south side of the commercial building that also houses a Stop N Save gas station and clothing store.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the psychic reader’s suite, but smoke damaged the adjacent clothing store because of a common attic, said Battalion Chief Alan Ernst of the Modesto Regional Fire Authority.

Investigators found evidence the fire had been intentionally set in the room where readings took place, Ernst said.

The fire and smoke damage was estimated at $30,000, including a hole cut in the roof to ventilate the building.
