Modesto firefighters discover marijuana grow in burning house

October 27, 2013

— A fire early Sunday damaged a south Modesto residence that housed an extensive marijuana-growing operation, authorities said.

At about 4:10 a.m., neighbors reported a popping noise and smoke coming from the roof of the home in the 1800 block of Los Pajaros Lane, south of West Hatch Road.

Firefighters found grow lights and marijuana plants throughout the building, which was not occupied, said Battalion Chief Hugo Patino of the Modesto Regional Fire Authority.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and were there until 5:45 a.m.

Officials suspect a faulty electrical panel was the cause of the blaze.

There was no estimate on damage.

The Modesto police narcotics unit was investigating.
