Fatal tanker accident west of Modesto

Bee staff reportsOctober 25, 2013

The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident west of Modesto.

According to the CHP, the accident occurred at 8 a.m. Friday at Finney Road near North Avenue. A 55-year-old man from Turlock, whose name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was driving a 2009 Freightliner south on Finney as Efrain Garcia, 53, of Modesto was turning from North onto Finney in a 1997 GMC 3500 truck.

As the vehicles passed going in opposite directions, the left side of farm equipment Garcia was towing hit the Freightliner. The Freightliner driver lost control of the truck, which went off the road and hit a Modesto Irrigation District power pole.

The pole was sheared off, dropping wires down onto the road. The tanker came to rest on its side in an adjacent field.

Garcia was not injured.

Alcohol or drugs are not considered to be a factor in the crash, the CHP said in a news release.
