MODESTO — Modesto Regional Fire Authority firefighters found more than they were expecting when they responded to a call of a vegetation fire along Highway 99 on Monday night.
Dispatched just before 7 p.m. to a report of a grass fire near the Kansas Avenue onramp, the first company to arrive found additional fires to the north and asked for more resources, Battalion Chief Hugo Patino said Tuesday.
Five engines, a battalion chief and an investigator were on the scene of the Kansas fire and fires just north of the Woodland overpass and just south of the Ninth Street overpass, he said. All were along the northbound lanes.
One lane was closed for about 90 minutes as crews put out the fires.
Patino said the department believes the fires were intentionally set. There were no witnesses, but one motorist reported seeing a road flare burning alongside the highway.
