MODESTO — Officers at a DUI checkpoint near downtown Modesto last week arrested seven people and cited 20 more for driving either an unlicensed vehicle or with a license that had either been suspended or revoked.
The Modesto Police Department will have similar checkpoints Friday and Saturday.
Last Fridays checkpoint was set up at I and Seventh streets from 9:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m., according to spokeswoman Heather Graves. Here are the statistics:
• 320 vehicles screened.
• Four DUI-alcohol suspects arrested.
• Two DUI-drug impairment suspects arrested.
• Twenty drivers cited or arrested for operating a vehicle unlicensed or while suspended/revoked.
• One arrested on other criminal charges.
• Two other citations issued.
Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunken and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public, Graves said in a news release.
The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
