Edith James: Modesto has proven irresponsibility

October 19, 2013

Modesto city government is a strong city manager government with a weak mayor and City Council. The city manager makes the decisions about spending tax money and staffing. The city council can approve or disapprove.

Our current city manager has not demonstrated an ability to manage taxpayers’ money efficiently. Remember the low-cost housing fiasco of just a few weeks ago. Overpaying for the land was not considered wrong by city government. Apparently fiscal responsibility is not a requirement for managing taxpayer money.

Measure X official language does not restrict the spending to public safety (police and fire). The tax increase goes to the general fund.

Why give a proven fiscal irresponsible city government more of our tax money? No on Measure X.

Editor’s Note: The council reviews and approves the city budget and large expenditures. Under the city code, the city manager may approve expenditures under $50,000.
