MODESTO BEE

• LARGE SCHOOLS1. (1) Pitman — Wanna be the best? Gotta beat the best. Three-time defending CCC champ makes the trip up Highway 99 for showdown with three-time reiging champ Buhach Colony.

2. (2) Turlock — Gets No. 2 Merced this week as CCC play gets started.

3. (3) Merced — After a league-wide bye last week, Bears host the Bulldogs.

4. (4) Oakdale — Mustangs tuned up for showdown with No. 5 Manteca by thumping Weston Ranch 62-12.

5. (5) Manteca — Beat Lathrop 56-7 last week, but competition gets a bit tougher — No. 4 Oakdale. Large-school poll sure to look a lot different next week.

• SMALL SCHOOLS1. (1) Central Catholic — Freshman Montell Bland stepped in for the injured Matt Ringer and rushed for 194 yards in 24-21 win over Pacheco.

2. (2) Amador — Had well-deserved bye after 14-9 win over Capital Christian on Sept. 27. Should have little problem with Bret Harte.

3. (3) Ripon — Faces 4-1 Hughson, third in its four-game gauntlet of Escalon, Modesto Christian, Huskies and Hilmar.4. (4) Hilmar — Faces Riverbank in its homecoming game; should be 7-0 on Oct. 18 when Ripon comes to town.

5. (nr) Escalon — Not your typical 3-3 teams. Losses have come Los Banos, Patterson and Ripon, teams with a combined 15-1 record.
