Prep stars of the week (10-10-13)

Ja’Quan Gardner, Central Valley, Sr., RB — Just another night at the office for Mr. Gardner, who inches closer to the Stanislaus District’s all-time rushing record. He had 215 yards and three TDs.

Andrew Brown, Ripon Christian, Sr., RB — Brown has an outside shot at the District’s all-time rushing record, but ultimately might be undone by his team’s success. He carried the ball just nine times and still managed 209 yards and four TDs in a 45-14 rout of Denair. Also caught five passes for 156 yards.

Montell Bland, Central Catholic, Fr., RB — The recent call-up from the junior varsity stepped in for the injured Matt Ringer and delivered a 33-carry, 194-yard performance in a 24-21, Western Athletic Conference win over Pacheco. It was the freshman’s second consecutive 100-yard performance.

Ozzie Ramos, Central Valley, Sr, MF — Ramos scored five goals and had four assists in Tuesday’s 12-0 victory over Central Catholic for the 17-1 Hawks, who are ranked No. 2 in the state and No. 7 in the nation according to MaxPreps.com. Ramos’ teammate, state leading scorer Omar Orozco, had four goals and one assist in the victory..

Nicole Marchese and Jacquelin Arretche, Los Banos, Srs. — Marchese, the Tigers' No. 1 singles player, and Arretche, No. 2, both dispatched a pair of opponents last week. Marchese defeated Livingston's Jasdeep Bassi 6-0, 6-0, then came back two days later to beat Central Valley's Emeley Amaya love and love. Meanwhile, Arretche beat the Wolves' Taranpreet Kaur 6-0, 6-1, then bested CV's Naomi Torres 6-0, 6-0.
