Authorities do not suspect foul play in the death of a man found in a canal just west of Highway 99 and north of Modesto Junior College’s west campus.

Firefighters, police and Stanislaus County coroner’s officials worked at the scene, recovering the body from the canal. Modesto police identified the man as Jose Tapia, 75, of Modesto.

Police said Friday afternoon that Tapia died of an apparent heart attack.

The victim lived in a nearby care home, according to police Sgt. Ivan Valencia. It appeared the man, who was dressed warmly, had gone for a walk and slipped into the canal, Valencia said.
