Respect the democratic process

October 11, 2013

Democratic principles have governed our country since its inception. Obamacare is a law that was put into place through the legislative process. Passed in both the House and Senate and signed into law by the president.

It even passed muster by being reviewed by the Supreme Court.

Republicans are desperate to overturn Obamacare. Apparently they can’t accomplish that through the democratic process, so they’ve chosen to run an end around democracy by shutting down the government. Even worse, they’ve decided to risk the full faith and credit of our country to get their way.

Democratic principles are what makes democracy work. The peaceable transfer of power, majority rule and the protection of the minority is what our Founding Fathers created for us. Following and respecting that process is no small matter.

Our political history is filled with instances which, although we may disagree strongly with the outcome, we accept it. Al Gore accepted a divided Supreme Court’s decision to make George Bush president.

If Republicans want to overturn Obamacare, then win some elections. Respect the democratic process, accept Obamacare as the law of the land, and finally get over it!
