Much has been said about the standoff in Washington and the resulting federal government shutdown. My thoughts:
1. Either the government is shut down or its not. The practice of some services continuing while others do not is just a foolish game. It is a means for Congress and the administration to dodge the true consequences of their actions. A total shutdown would make them accountable for their actions.
2. Since there should be no spending during a government shutdown, the power to levy taxes should also be suspended. If they cant spend, they dont need the income. Why should taxpayers continue to pay for services that are not being provided?
3. I truly feel for furloughed federal employees, but the practice of paying them later for days not worked constitutes a simple gift of public funds. They didnt work so there should be no pay. Why should they get a paid vacation at taxpayers expense? This is just another example of leaderships ability to dodge the true consequences of their actions at taxpayer expense
I know, too simple. Its more complicated than that. Bologna. It is that simple.
