MJC men fall on late goal

FRESNO — Fresno City's goal in the final minute Tuesday cost the Modesto Junior College men's soccer team its first loss of the season, a 2-1 setback for the state's No. 2-ranked Pirates (8-1-2).

Francisco Chavez notched his 14th goal, tied for best in the state, off a pass from Alex Moscaira for MJC. Edgar Martinez accounted for seven saves. Fresno improved to 8-4-1.

• STILL ON TOP —Arleen Xayasone overcame brisk wind to fire an 83 at Sacramento's Bartley Cavanaugh as the Pirates won their sixth of nine Big 8 Conference tournaments.

Xayasone placed third individually as MJC built its lead over runner-up Sierra to eight points with three tournaments left. Ariel Walsh posted an 87 and Angela Nuccio and Jordan Garcia both had 87.

• IMPORTANT WIN — The Pirates jumped back into contention in the Big 8 race with a much-needed 2-0 win at Sierra, the state's 4th-ranked team.

Modesto took charge early in the game when Brianna Ruiz finished off a cross from Danielle Nava. Marissa Rouse's goal, set up by Selena Da Silva's header, clinched it with eight minutes left. Ashley Almeida had six saves for the Pirates.
